BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- A Birmingham-based business support group is presenting its first insurance and long-term planning workshop for small business owners.
The South Region Minority Supplier Development Council will hold its Insurance Summit for Small Business Owners Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Birmingham's Crossplex.
All business owners are invited to participate, whether minority owned not. Registration is $10 per person.
"Small business owners spend so much time trying to grow their business that they spend little time in making sure that the business will be able to survive in the event of a catastrophe, either personally or a natural disaster," SRMSDC President Chris Lewis said this afternoon. "This summit will help you to address that issue. We're going to talk about would your business survive in the event that you are no longer there."
Lewis said small business owners needed a forum where they could take one day to evaluate their insurance coverage and succession plans.
The title sponsor for the event is BlueCross BlueShield of Alabama along with support from Allstate Insurance, Protective Life, Nationwide Insurance, VIVA Health, Toyota Manufacturing, Hyundai Manufacturing, Thyssenkrupp Steel and the city of Birmingham.
The event will begin with morning information sessions including updates and discussion on the Affordable Care Act and succession planning.
Lewis said he was inspired to organize the summit after seeing first-hand the results of business owners who failed to prepare for the future.
"I reached out to so many minority business owners and I found that I was getting the same response too often, 'they've passed,' Lewis recalled. "It made me think, 'I wonder if they had a succession plan.' This is a value added service that we need to survive."
Other sessions include discussions on utilizing tax credits, life insurance versus whole life insurance, disaster planning and simplified employee benefit plans.
The event ends with a product presentation fair from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. where insurance agents will be available to provide product information and quotes.
