A New Perspective on the NCAA Tournament Bubble: Similarity Scores and March Madness

It is officially the best time of year. Selection Sunday is mere days away, and from now until Sunday night, you will hear so many teams put on the bubble that it will stretch the boundaries of metaphorical credulity. Instead of arguing over the RPI and SOS of these teams, parsing their resumes and their bad losses, I?ve decided to look at the group with a fresh perspective: similarity scores. Using the same methodology as the past weeks, I ran similarity scores on five teams that are, as of the games played through Wednesday night, firmly in our bubble discussion. Using this lens, we can see who the bubblers are most similar to from past years, look at whether those teams made the Big Dance, and see if their performance can help us make some March Madness predictions . As you will soon see, one of these teams is not like the others.
