Red Wine May Help Lower Breast Cancer Risk

LOS ANGELES-- There's preliminary evidence that suggests red wine might lower the risk for breast cancer.

Doctors at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles say chemicals in the skin of red grapes slightly lowered estrogen levels while increasing testosterone in pre-menopausal women who drank eight ounces of red wine a night for a month.

Study participants were randomized to drink either red or white wine daily for almost a month, then switched to the other type of wine. Doctors collected blood samples twice each month to measure hormone levels.

The study was small, including just 36 women. Researchers say it's much too early to suggest non-drinkers start a red wine regimen.
