COHOES ? The oaths of office taken by the re-elected city of Cohoes officials were the main focus of many people on Friday, but it was a 2 ? -year-old who stole the show at City Hall.

As 6th Ward Alderman Ralph Signoracci IV took his oath before a judge, his family, and the dozens of area residents and officials who packed the second floor meeting room, Signoracci?s son, Raffaele, decided to join his father by raising one of his hands and then waving to the judge and the amused crowd.

The emcee of the event, state Assembly Majority Leader Ron Canestrari, D-Cohoes, had pointed out earlier that Signoracci was starting his second term in elected office that other Signoraccis had also filled in years past. Mayor John McDonald, who was the last to be sworn in among the group of county legislators and city officials, observed, ?[Ralph?s son] is already campaigning.?

At the year-end event, McDonald also said that this was the first time in his tenure that there was a repeating Council of the same elected officials. They include April Kennedy, starting her third term in the 1st Ward; Fred Turcotte, starting his second term in the 2nd Ward; George Primeau, starting his 4th term in the 3rd Ward; Dianne Nolin, starting her second term in the 4th Ward; Roger Ceccucci, starting his 2nd term in the 5th Ward; and Signoracci in the 6th Ward. The mayor is starting his 4th term.

McDonald said that the dialogue the council maintains is what the job and serving the public is all about. ?We?re not always agreeing but we are getting the job done and that is the most important thing.?

Compared with when he started as mayor more than a decade ago, he felt the city was in much better shape though the last four years, due to the recession, have been difficult. In the future, he plans to further expand the residential population and increase commercial development.

?We?re changing the picture of Cohoes,? he said.

The re-elected mayor acknowledged his own three children as inspirations for his job and said he has received their honest feedback on matters on a few occasions.

?They?re what keep you going,? he said. Continued...

Euro weakens broadly; S&P 500 erases 2011 gains (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? The euro weakened about 1 percent against the dollar and the yen on Wednesday, one day before an important auction of long-dated Italian debt, while U.S. stocks slid more than 1 percent on concerns about the economy in early 2012.

The European single currency hit a fresh 11-month low against the dollar of $1.291 and a 10-year low against the yen as data showed banks were hoarding the cash recently injected by the European Central Bank rather than lending it out - a bad omen for the European economy in 2012.

"If European banks are still this concerned, it's not a good sign," said Karl Schamotta, senior markets strategist with Western Union Business Solutions. "That underlines the possibility that this liquidity crunch is getting worse and will continue into the new year.

A strong sale of short-term bonds by Italy Wednesday morning initially brought some relief to European markets, but concerns about Thursday's more challenging auction eventually contributed to the weakness of the euro.

U.S. stock indexes fell more than 1 percent in thin trading as investors feared what many expect to be a tough start to the year. The broad S&P 500 index erased its 2011 gains after just turning positive in last week's rally.

"It seems like the weakness in euro, breaking that $1.30 level, really made investors push that 'sell' button," said Ryan Detrick, senior technical strategist with Schaeffer's Investment Research in Cincinnati, Ohio.

"But it's somewhat of an exaggerated move, considering that there isn't much volume, and this could end in a one-day selloff."

The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) closed down 139.94 points, or 1.14 percent, at 12,151.41, while the Standard & Poor's 500 Index (.SPX) lost 15.79 points, or 1.25 percent, to 1,249.64. The Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) fell 35.22 points, or 1.34 percent, to 2,589.98.

Wall Street's decline weighed on European stocks, which erased early gains. The FTSEurofirst 300 (.FTEU3) index of top European shares fell 0.71 percent to end at 983.32, after rising as much as 0.63 percent earlier in the session.

The MSCI All-Country World index (.MIWD00000PUS) lost 1.34 percent, taking losses for the year to more than 10 percent.

The decline in stocks lifted prices of U.S. government bonds. Benchmark 10-year Treasuries rose 22/32 in price, with the yield at 1.925 percent - below the psychologically significant 2 percent level.

ITALIAN AUCTIONS

The euro slid to a session low of $1.291, its lowest since January, as investors worried about Italy's sale of 8.5 billion euros worth of debt with maturities of up to 10 years on Thursday. It last traded 1.0 percent weaker at $1.2937.

Against the yen, the euro hit its lowest level since June 2001 at 100.70.

Earlier, the single currency briefly rose against the dollar after Italy's short-term debt costs halved at an auction, helped by a new government austerity package and cheap liquidity from the European Central Bank.

However, Italy will need greater commitment from international investors to sell its bonds on Thursday.

"Tomorrow's auction is more important and will give more insight into general sentiment. Today was a warm-up," said Neil Mellor, currency strategist at Bank of New York Mellon.

U.S. crude oil prices fell $1.98 to settle at $99.36 a barrel. They had gained more than one dollar in the previous session following Iran's threat to stop oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz if Western countries impose new sanctions on its exports.

Tehran faces the prospect of further sanctions from the European Union by the end of January over its nuclear ambitions. Washington said it saw "an element of bluster" in the threat to close the Gulf, and the U.S. Fifth Fleet said it would not allow any disruption in the world's most important oil route.

"The threat by Iran to close the Strait of Hormuz supported the oil market yesterday, but the effect is fading today as it will probably be empty threats as they cannot stop the flow for a longer period due to the amount of U.S. hardware in the area," said Thorbjoern bak Jensen, oil analyst with Global Risk Management.

(AP Photo/Charlie Neibergall, File)

One of the nation's most widely planted crops ? a genetically engineered corn plant that makes its own insecticide ? may be losing its effectiveness because a major pest appears to be developing resistance more quickly than scientists expected.

The U.S. food supply is not in any immediate danger because the problem remains isolated. But scientists fear potentially risky farming practices could be blunting the hybrid's sophisticated weaponry.

When it was introduced in 2003, so-called Bt corn seemed like the answer to farmers' dreams: It would allow growers to bring in bountiful harvests using fewer chemicals because the corn naturally produces a toxin that poisons western corn rootworms. The hybrid was such a swift success that it and similar varieties now account for 65 percent of all U.S. corn acres ? grain that ends up in thousands of everyday foods such as cereal, sweeteners and cooking oil.

But over the last few summers, rootworms have feasted on the roots of Bt corn in parts of four Midwestern states, suggesting that some of the insects are becoming resistant to the crop's pest-fighting powers.

Scientists say the problem could be partly the result of farmers who've planted Bt corn year after year in the same fields.

Most farmers rotate corn with other crops in a practice long used to curb the spread of pests, but some have abandoned rotation because they need extra grain for livestock or because they have grain contracts with ethanol producers. Other farmers have eschewed the practice to cash in on high corn prices, which hit a record in June.

"Right now, quite frankly, it's very profitable to grow corn," said Michael Gray, a University of Illinois crop sciences professor who's tracking Bt corn damage in that state.

A scientist recently sounded an alarm throughout the biotech industry when he published findings concluding that rootworms in a handful of Bt cornfields in Iowa had evolved an ability to survive the corn's formidable defenses.

Similar crop damage has been seen in parts of Illinois, Minnesota and Nebraska, but researchers are still investigating whether rootworms capable of surviving the Bt toxin were the cause.

University of Minnesota entomologist Kenneth Ostlie said the severity of rootworm damage to Bt fields in Minnesota has eased since the problem surfaced in 2009. Yet reports of damage have become more widespread, and he fears resistance could be spreading undetected because the damage rootworms inflict often isn't apparent.

Without strong winds, wet soil or both, plants can be damaged at the roots but remain upright, concealing the problem. He said the damage he observed in Minnesota came to light only because storms in 2009 toppled corn plants with damaged roots.

"The analogy I often use with growers is that we're looking at an iceberg and all we see is the tip of the problem," Ostlie said. "And it's a little bit like looking at an iceberg through fog because the only time we know we have a problem is when we get the right weather conditions."

Seed maker Monsanto Co. created the Bt strain by splicing a gene from a common soil organism called Bacillus thuringiensis into the plant. The natural insecticide it makes is considered harmless to people and livestock.

Scientists always expected rootworms to develop some resistance to the toxin produced by that gene. But the worrisome signs of possible resistance have emerged sooner than many expected.

The Environmental Protection Agency recently chided Monsanto, declaring in a Nov. 22 report that it wasn't doing enough to monitor suspected resistance among rootworm populations. The report urged a tougher approach, including expanding monitoring efforts to a total of seven states, including Colorado, South Dakota and Wisconsin. The agency also wanted to ensure farmers in areas of concern begin using insecticides and other methods to combat possible resistance.

Monsanto insists there's no conclusive proof that rootworms have become immune to the crop, but the company said it regards the situation seriously and has been taking steps that are "directly in line" with federal recommendations.

Some scientists fear it could already be too late to prevent the rise of resistance, in large part because of the way some farmers have been planting the crop.

They point to two factors: farmers who have abandoned crop rotation and others have neglected to plant non-Bt corn within Bt fields or in surrounding fields as a way to create a "refuge" for non-resistant rootworms in the hope they will mate with resistant rootworms and dilute their genes.

Experts worry that the actions of a few farmers could jeopardize an innovation that has significantly reduced pesticide use and saved growers billions of dollars in lost yields and chemical-control costs.

"This is a public good that should be protected for future generations and not squandered too quickly," said Gregory Jaffe, biotechnology director at the Center for Science and Public Policy.

Iowa State University entomologist Aaron Gassmann published research in July concluding that resistance had arisen among rootworms he collected in four Iowa fields. Those fields had been planted for three to six straight years with Bt corn ? a practice that ensured any resistant rootworms could lay their eggs in an area that would offer plenty of food for the next generation.

For now, the rootworm resistance in Iowa appears isolated, but Gassmann said that could change if farmers don't quickly take action. For one, the rootworm larvae grow into adult beetles that can fly, meaning resistant beetles could easily spread to new areas.

"I think this provides an important early warning," Gassmann said.

Besides rotating crops, farmers can also fight resistance by switching between Bt corn varieties, which produce different toxins, or planting newer varieties with multiple toxins. They can also treat damaged fields with insecticides to kill any resistant rootworms ? or employ a combination of all those approaches.

The EPA requires growers to devote 20 percent of their fields to non-Bt corn. After the crop was released in 2003, nine out of 10 farmers met that standard. Now it's only seven or eight, Jaffe said.

Seed companies are supposed to cut off farmers with a record of violating the planting rules, which are specified in seed-purchasing contracts. To improve compliance, companies are now introducing blends that have ordinary seed premixed with Bt seed.

Brian Schaumburg, who farms 1,400 acres near the north-central Illinois town of Chenoa, plants as much Bt corn as he can every spring.

But Schaumburg said he shifts his planting strategies every year ? varying which Bt corn hybrids he plants and using pesticides when needed ? to reduce the chances rootworm resistance might emerge in his fields.

Schaumburg said he always plants the required refuge fields and believes very few farmers defy the rule. Those who do put the valuable crop at risk, he said.

"If we don't do it right, we could lose these good tools," Schaumberg said.

If rootworms do become resistant to Bt corn, it "could become the most economically damaging example of insect resistance to a genetically modified crop in the U.S.," said Bruce Tabashnik, an entomologist at the University of Arizona. "It's a pest of great economic significance ? a billion-dollar pest."

AUTOMOTIVE - DRIVEN: Skyactiv Livens Up Mazda3

Always a favorite, the compact Mazda3 comes back for 2012 with a facelift, an upgraded interior and an optional new engine technology with the inscrutable name Skyactiv that boosts both power and fuel mileage.

Mazda3 is the Japanese automaker?s top-selling car, so that?s the one that gets the first taste of Skyactiv, which will be introduced in a raft of the Mazda?s upcoming gas and diesel engines. For this application, the 2-liter engine gets 155 horsepower, seven more than the standard 2-liter 4, and a torque increase of 10-15 percent to a maximum 148 pound-feet.

Most impressive, though, is the fuel mileage. According to the aces at EPA, the Mazda3 Skyactiv gets 28 city and 40 highway for the six-speed automatic-transmission version. Mileage with the six-speed manual is slightly lower, at 27 city and 39 highway.

Skyactiv technology is a suite of engine and transmission updates to gain power and fuel mileage. (Photo: Mazda) Part of the Skyactiv gain comes from a direct-fuel-injection system with multi-hole injectors, designed to provide the most-effective spray pattern, and dual sequential timing for its 16 valves. The big trick, though, is found in the uniquely shaped pistons and combustion chambers that allow a compression-ratio boost to an exotic 12:1, which is solidly in performance-car range.

Mazda says that the piston cavity shapes engineered for the Skyactiv-G engine ?ensure a shorter combustion time and suppresses the impact on power and torque from engine knocking.?

That compression ratio is for the U.S.-spec cars, where they will be able to run on 87 Octane without pinging themselves apart. The ratio gets even higher for Japan and European models, which run with a remarkable 14:1 compression ratio with a commensurate increase in power, although they must use high-octane gas. Too bad we can?t get that here.

The result for U.S. is the Skyactiv-G engine, which is lively and efficient, and it makes the already enjoyable Mazda 3 even more fun to drive without as many stops to gas up. The standard 2-liter engine remains available in the base model, and there?s still the 2.5-liter four banger that produces 167 horsepower.

Mazda3 is already one of the most fun compacts to drive, with its solid chassis and firm suspension begging to be run through the turns like a sports car. Driving enthusiasts will appreciate the stiff ride though regular folk might find it a too buffeting. The extra power from the lightweight engine adds to the zest.

The styling of the Mazda3 sedan was made sleeker with the 2012 update. (Photo: Mazda) The Skyactiv-G engine comes standard in the Mazda3 i Touring and Grand Touring models, which is the one in the four-door sedan that I drove. A cool-looking four-door hatchback version is also available, which would be my choice for the extra cargo space.

The test car also came with the new Skyactiv-Drive six-speed automatic transmission that shifts crisply and cleanly whatever the demands. The torque converter includes a lock-up for
?minimal decrease in fuel economy and an increase in direct drive feel,? Mazda says.

Sure, I would prefer the driving precision of the six-speed manual, which Mazda admirably makes available for all Mazda3 models, even though the new automatic functions extremely well and gains gas mileage compared with the manual. But for a car with the sporty drivability of Mazda3, I?d say that stickshift would be right on.

The styling update is fairly mild, though I think the designers have managed to tone down that maniacal grin that their cars have been wearing for the past few years. The pronounced front wheel arches are a good look that?s finding its way into competitors? cars.

The upgraded interior has a premium feel, especially for this modest price range, and the Grand Touring Model comes loaded with features, including leather trim, power driver seat, a 286-watt Bose audio system with 10 speakers, Bluetooth and a compact navigation system, all for a base price of $22,300.

The base model starts at around $19,000 and the top-dog Mazdaspeed3 performance model is priced at $24,000, which you?d have to agree is a lot of car for the cash.

The tester also had an optional Technology Package with a blind-spot monitoring system, satellite radio, rain-sensing wipers and adaptive bi-xenon headlights, all for $1,400. With $795 shipping, the Mazda2 Skyactiv sedan came out to $24,495.

An enjoyably sporty compact car with a boost in power and gas-saving technology sounds like just what the doctor ordered. Mazda once again seems to have hit the sweet spot.

Greece: Top prosecutor probes Turkey-arson claim (AP)

ATHENS, Greece ? Greece's top prosecutor on Tuesday ordered an emergency inquiry into a Turkish newspaper report that Turkish government-funded agents set forest fires in Greece in the mid-1990s.

The Birgun newspaper quoted former Turkish Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz as making the allegations. But Yilmaz said he had been misquoted and that the allegations were untrue.

Greece's Supreme Court prosecutor Yiannis Tentes launched an emergency inquiry, ordering investigations reopened into mid-1990s wildfires blamed on arson, while the Foreign Ministry said it was seeking an official response from Ankara.

"Information that has been published and attributed to former prime minister of Turkey Mr. Yilmaz by the Turkish press is serious and should be investigated," Greek ministry spokesman Gregory Delavekouras said in a statement. "The Greek side expects to be informed by the authorities of Turkey."

Tensions between traditional rivals Greece and Turkey were running high at the time referred to in the newspaper report, with the two countries coming to the brink of war in 1996 over disputed sovereignty of a tiny island in the Aegean Sea. The two NATO allies have since improved ties.

Yilmaz, who served as Turkey's prime minister three times during the 1990s, was quoted by the newspaper as saying he had not been briefed by his predecessor in office, Tansu Ciller, on covert state-funded operations that included a "forest retaliation against Greece."

He later told reporters he had been misquoted and had been referring to unsubstantiated reports of Greek involvement in Turkish forest fires.

Obama, Biden welcome home US commander in Iraq (AP)

JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md. ? Blending solemn tradition with joyous reunion, the top commander of U.S. forces in Iraq returned home to U.S. soil Tuesday, greeted by his wife and his president in an understated ceremony to mark the end of the nine-year conflict.

President Barack Obama met Gen. Lloyd Austin and his top command staff with a smart salute at this military post in suburban Washington. Austin made his homecoming with his staff bearing the U.S. Forces-Iraq flag, the symbolic conclusion to the war.

Obama was accompanied by Vice President Joe Biden. Though neither offered formal remarks, both greeted the troops and their families.

Those families, however, had to await the ritual return of the flag before embracing their loved ones. Under Army custom the flag will be retired and either stored or displayed.

"Today we bring home the colors to United States soil, at the same time we embrace many of our own back into the fold just in time for the holidays," Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the returning men and women. "Welcome home."

The last U.S. troops withdrew from Iraq on Sunday. In a visible reminder of the conflict, Dempsey, Austin and the troops who accompanied him wore their combat uniforms.

With Obama, an early opponent of the war, sitting nearby, Austin praised the war's outcome.

"What our troops achieved in Iraq over the course of nearly nine years is truly remarkable," he said. "Together with our coalition partners and core of dedicated civilians, they removed a brutal dictator and gave the Iraqi people their freedom."

Later, at the White House, Obama referred to the ceremony while calling for House Republicans to accept a Senate bipartisan compromise to extend a payroll tax cut for two months.

"These Americans and all Americans who served are the embodiment of courage, and selflessness and patriotism," Obama said during a surprise appearance in the White House briefing room. "They work as a team and they do their job. And they do it for something bigger than themselves."

"The people in this town need to learn something from them."

Dempsey and Austin saluted military families and Dempsey also singled out the USO and its history of entertaining troops during wars. Among those in the audience were former NBA star Robert Horry, a participant in a current USO holiday tour.

As the ceremony concluded, Obama waded into a teary and jubilant scene of reunion as troops and their families hugged and posed for photographs.

South Korea a center for Gaelic games

Fifty teams from 14 countries came together in South Korea for two days of Gaelic football, one of the world's oldest sports.

? A local, slice-of-life story from a Monitor correspondent.
An obscure game from a far-off land ? Gaelic football ? is taking a somewhat unlikely spot on the South Korean athletic landscape.

The country recently capped its 10 years of participation in the sport by hosting its first-ever Asian Gaelic Games this past October. More than 50 teams from 14 countries with more than 700 male and female players came together for two days of Gaelic football and hurling ? another Irish national sport. The 15th annual tournament was reportedly to be the largest held to date.

This year?s competition, staged in Suwon, a city just south of Seoul, marked a decade of relative growth for a sport often described as a rugby-
soccer hybrid in a country normally most at ease with soccer and baseball.

Back in 2001, the Irish expatriates who introduced the game to the country were met with quizzical stares and tentative questions from bemused locals as they performed some of Gaelic football?s signature modes of play: typical moves include punch-passes and soloing, a technique that involves dropping the ball and then toe kicking it upward into the hands.

Over the years, though, the sport has spread across the country, picking up a steady flow of locals eager to learn how to play what is regarded as one of the world?s oldest sports.

Jury ends 1st day deliberating Mass. terror trial (AP)

BOSTON ? A Massachusetts man accused of plotting to help al-Qaida was someone who talked about waging violent jihad against the United States for years, then took steps to realize his dream by traveling to Yemen to seek training in a terrorist camp so he could later go to Iraq to kill American soldiers, prosecutors said Friday.

But defense lawyers for Tarek Mehanna said he was an aspiring scholar of Islam who went to Yemen looking for religious schools. Although he was angry about the U.S. invasion of Iraq and expressed strong anti-American sentiment in online chats presented by prosecutors during his federal trial, Mehanna never wanted to kill Americans and never planned to fight U.S. soldiers, his lawyers told jurors during closing arguments.

Mehanna, 29, an American from Sudbury, an upscale Boston suburb, faces seven charges that could send him to prison for life if convicted, including conspiracy to provide material to a designated terrorist organization, al-Qaida, conspiracy to kill in a foreign country and making false statements to the FBI.

Jurors have listened to nearly eight weeks of testimony. Prosecutors focused on hundreds of online chats on Mehanna's computer in which they say Mehanna and his friends talk about their desire to participate in jihad. Several of those friends were called by prosecutors to testify against Mehanna, including one man who said he, Mehanna and a third friend wanted to get terrorism training in Yemen so they could fight American soldiers in Iraq.

Prosecutors allege that when Mehanna and another man were unable to find a terrorist camp in Yemen, Mehanna returned to the United States, saw himself as part of al-Qaida's "media wing," and began translating and distributing online texts and videos promoting violent jihad.

Mehanna's lawyers told jurors that prosecutors were employing scare tactics by portraying Mehanna as a would-be terrorist and were trying to punish him for his beliefs. They said Mehanna's online activities were protected by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

"They never gave you the whole story of who Tarek Mehanna was and what he was about, and that distorted the facts in this case," said attorney Janice Bassil.

"I certainly hope they can't scare you," she said.

But Assistant U.S. Attorney Aloke Chakravarty said Mehanna is not being prosecuted for his political views, but for the actions he took to support terrorists.

"It's about the fact that he agreed to do the things that he had always talked about, which was to participate in jihad against U.S. soldiers," Chakravarty said.

"The Constitution doesn't protect that," he said.

The defense, which built its case on the testimony of six terrorism experts, acknowledged that Mehanna expressed admiration for Osama bin Laden, but said he made it clear in his writings that he disagreed with him and other al-Qaida leaders about many things, including the use of suicide bombers and the killing of civilians. Bassil said he was kicked off an Internet forum for having views that were too moderate.

"Here's what it boils down to: the only idea that Tarek Mehanna had in common with al-Qaida was that Muslims had the right and the obligation to defend themselves when Muslims were attacked in their own lands," she said.

Mehanna did not testify.

The jury deliberated nearly two hours Friday afternoon after receiving final instructions from U.S. District Judge George O'Toole Jr. Deliberations will resume on Monday.

O'Toole told jurors that to find Mehanna guilty of conspiring to provide material support to al-Qaida, they must find that he worked "in coordination with or at the direction of" the organization. He said independent advocacy on behalf of the organization is not a violation of the law.

Mehanna's lawyers focused on that theme during closing arguments.

Attorney J.W. Carney Jr. told jurors that "independent advocacy" is the most important phrase in the case against Mehanna.

"It is not material support if you are independently advocating," he said.

"I'm not asking you to accept Tarek's beliefs ? I'm not ? but I am asking you to accept his right to independently advocate them."

"Extreme Makeover" cancelled by ABC after nine seasons (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Sorry, fans of inspirational home-renovation stories: "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" is coming to an end.

ABC has decided to end the series' run after its ninth season wraps up in January. The show debuted in 2003 as a spin-off of "Extreme Makeover."

Its final episode -- the series' 200th -- will air on January 13, and will feature the team building seven homes in seven days for tornado victims in Joplin, Mo.

Luckily for the show's followers, the network will air special episodes of the series following the cancellation, though the network has announced no specific dates.

The handwriting had been on the tastefully-remodeled wall for some time. The show lost more than a third of its audience this season, thanks in part to a move to Friday. Between the start of the season and mid-November, it averaged a 1.5 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic. The 34.9 percent audience loss -- since the same period in 2010 -- made it No. 4 on TheWrap's list of the biggest ratings losers of the fall.

Meanwhile, host Ty Pennington has joined the cast of ABC's daytime talk offering "The Revolution," which premieres January 16.

Why This ER Doctor Decided That Business Is Way Better Than ...

Image: MIT

Christine Tsien Silvers

After several years as an ER doctor, Christine Tsien Silvers decided to quit clinical medicine to become the Chief Medical Officer of a small company and, therefore, leave behind the days of having to see an "average number of patients per hour."

Her recent guest post on Philip Greenspun's blog says:

Let's be honest: leaving clinical medicine had crossed my mind before ? for example, at Hour 24 of pained wakefulness during Emergency Medicine (EM) Residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital. Later, while working in the community, I would sometimes sigh, proud and privileged to be able to help patients, yet nostalgic for less harried work. Those belligerent types yelling profanities, or the guy tired of waiting five hours and promising to sue everyone, those towering chart piles of could-be-critical yet still waiting-to-be-seen patients, the hallways littered with ticking-time-bomb, semi-stable admitted patients awaiting inpatient rooms... such moments, unfortunately not infrequent, definitely gave me pause.

Five-digit medical malpractice insurance premiums also meant that for my first twentysome per diem shifts each year, I was paying to treat patients. My independent consultant work in my MIT dissertation area of "multivariate trend analysis," such as used in developing improved patient monitors, in stark contrast was not only rewarding but also accommodating?teleconferences could be scheduled between school drop-off and pickup, for example. Moreover, nobody was pressuring me to sacrifice my desire to be thorough in order to be faster...as my maternity leave too rapidly drew to a close, I felt increasingly convinced that perhaps I should hang up my stethoscope.

Unfortunately, practitioners turning their backs on medicine leave us wondering what will happen to the nation's medical field in a time when America is already behind in science. Reuters reported that "national studies show that at the elementary level, science is barely being taught" especially when compared to English and Math.?

And we're all left wondering, "Who will take care of us when we are injured or ill?"

First habitable-zone super-Earth discovered in orbit around a Sun-like star

Monday, December 5, 2011

NASA's Kepler Mission has discovered the first super-Earth orbiting in the habitable zone of a star similar to the Sun. A team of researchers, including Carnegie's Alan Boss, has discovered what could be a large, rocky planet with a surface temperature of about 72 degrees Fahrenheit, comparable to a comfortable spring day on Earth. This landmark finding will be published in the Astrophysical Journal.

The discovery team, led by William Borucki of the NASA Ames Research Center, used photometric data from the NASA Kepler space telescope, which monitors the brightness of 155,000 stars. Earth-size planets whose orbital planes are aligned such that they periodically pass in front of their stars result in tiny dimmings of their host star's light--dimmings that can only be measured by a highly specialized space telescope like Kepler.

This discovery is the first detection of a possibly habitable world in orbit around a Sun-like star.

The host star lies about 600 light-years away from us toward the constellations of Lyra and Cygnus. The star, a G5 star, has a mass and a radius only slightly smaller than that of our Sun, a G2 star. As a result, the host star is about 25% less luminous than the Sun. The planet orbits the G5 star with an orbital period of 290 days, compared to 365 days for the Earth, at a distance about 15% closer to its star than the Earth from the Sun. This results in the planet's balmy temperature. It orbits in the middle of the star's habitable zone, where liquid water is expected to be able to exist on the surface of the planet. Liquid water is necessary for life as we know it, and this new planet might well be not only habitable, perhaps even inhabited.

Numerous large, massive gas giant planets have been detected previously in habitable-zone orbits around solar-type stars, but gas giants are not thought to be capable of supporting life. This new exoplanet is the smallest-radius planet discovered in the habitable zone of any star to date. It is about 2.4 times larger than that of the Earth, putting it in the class of exoplanets known as super-Earths.

While the mass of this new planet is not known, it must be less than about 36 times that of the Earth, based on the absence of a measurable Doppler (radial velocity) wobble in the host star. The masses of several other super-Earths have been measured with the Doppler technique and determined to lie in the range of about 5 to 10 times that of the Earth: Some appear to be rocky, while others probably contain major fractions of ice and water. Either way, the new planet appears to be habitable.

"This discovery supports the growing belief that we live in a universe crowded with life," Boss said. "Kepler is on the verge of determining the actual abundance of habitable, Earth-like planets in our galaxy".

Build a Christmas Light Controller and Join a Global Network of Synchronized Lights [Video]

Build a Christmas Light Controller and Join a Global Network of Synchronized Lights If you're looking for a good Arduino starter project and you have the tools and time to get the job done, here's a great seasonal activity that will help you build your skills and join your house's holiday light display to a global network of lights, all synchronized and controlled by Twitter.

The first thing you'll need to buy are some GE Color Effects Christmas Lights?this particular type of light changes color on its own, but they're the lights that are most easily controlled by the CheerLights controller that you're going to build, thanks to instructions by the folks over at ioBridge Labs. You'll need an Arduino base board, a controller, and a few hookup wires, but the project is actually pretty simple, and when you're all finished, you can connect your holiday light show to the internet.

Once connected, anytime people tweet to the @Cheerlights twitter account or using the hashtag #cheerlights, all of the networked light displays all over the world will change at once. Hit the link below for the step-by-step, and give it a try before it's too late in the holiday season.

The 'cheapest' primary in a decade: 5 theories (The Week)

New York ? Confounding expectations, GOP candidates have spent considerably less so far than their counterparts in the last several presidential races. Why?

The 2012 presidential election is expected to be the most expensive ever: The Center for Responsive Politics forecasts that an astonishing $6 billion will be spent. President Obama is aiming to raise $1 billion, his GOP rival will surely try to match him, and ? thanks to loosened campaign-finance rules ? outside groups' spending on campaign ads could reach record levels. Odd, then, that so far, the GOP race has been "one of the cheapest primaries in more than a decade," Bloomberg reports. The top nine Republican candidates spent just $53 million through September, versus $132 million in the same period four years ago. What's going on? Here, five theories:

1. The glut of debates gives candidates free advertising
The candidates grouse about the grueling debate schedule, but it's the 11 televised face-offs that "have made this the cheapest Republican primary season since 1996," says Don Surber in the Charleston, W.V., Daily Mail. The much-watched debates have been great for most of the candidates ? sorry, Rick Perry ? by allowing cash-strapped contenders like Newt Gingrich and Herman Cain to rise to the top while helping "Mitt Romney conserve all that cash he has." With this much "free airtime" from the TV networks, who needs to pay for ads?

SEE MORE: Have Republicans 'gone off the rails' by endorsing waterboarding?

?

2. Viral web videos are cheaper and better than TV ads
The "profusion of 'web ads' being put out by the campaigns" has slashed expenses, says Jazz Shaw at?Hot Air. The cost of producing ads was always far less than paying TV stations to air them, so free web distribution is a boon. And since people choose to watch them, says Ann Althouse at her blog, these viral web ads will "become more important than those paid ads on television." Bonus: If a web video is "flamboyant" or bizarre enough, adds Shaw, cable news shows replay it "in endless loops to the target audience" that the campaigns want to reach.?

3. Social media has streamlined campaigning
The campaigns are getting smart about using new, "free resources like Twitter and Facebook to get some buzz going,"?says Shaw at?Hot Air. The rise of social media has also changed how campaigns spend by giving candidates "greater opportunity to connect with voters electronically and build databases of potential donors and volunteers without investing large amounts of time on the ground," says Jeff Zeleny in The New York Times.

SEE MORE: The 'disgraceful' CBS debate: Did the network mess up?

?

4. Fox News has replaced costly retail politics
The biggest change in this election cycle has been the death of traditional meet-and-greet retail politics, says Zeleny in The New York Times. Why should candidates spend time and money to visit Iowa and New Hampshire voters when "it's like a town hall every day on Fox News," says Gov. Sam Brownback (R-Kan.). The "Fox News effect" can be seen in the numbers: The network has interviewed Cain 63 times since he entered the race, and Gingrich has made 52 appearances.

5. The candidates are hoarding their cash for Obama
Leave it to tightfisted Republicans to slash their campaign spending during a recession, says Libby Spencer at?The Impolitic. But don't worry: "This is just the pre-game show." While some candidates, like Gingrich, don't have the cash to run ads now, wealthy ones like Romney and Perry are just keeping their powder dry. Once the GOP settles on a nominee, that candidate and allied political-action groups will "unleash a tsunami of cash to defeat Obama."

Russell Brand Slams Katy Perry Divorce Rumors

They're still totally living a teenage dream.

Despite a new web rumor that Katy Perry filed for divorce from Russell Brand after just a year of marriage, the kooky pair are stronger than ever -- just ask Brand!

PHOTOS: Katy and Russell's romance

"There are always rumors, aren't there?" the British comic, 36, says during a Friday appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. "In the end you have to just not engage with Internet technology, which is difficult because a lot of the nude women websites I quite enjoy," Brand cracked, laughing.

"I've treated the whole Internet now like it's a wicked little liar. Yeah. I am really happily married," he said of Perry, 27, whom he med in October 2010 at a tiger sanctuary in India.

"I'm married to Katy. Perpetually, until death do us part was the pledge."

IRL: Thule Crossover backpack, Technocel Battery Boost and upgrading from Firefox 3.6

Welcome to IRL, an ongoing feature where we talk about the gadgets, apps and toys we're using in real life and take a second look at products that already got the formal review treatment.

It's funny how eerily quiet things get after Thanksgiving weekend. Except for some tablet going on sale next week, lots of companies are saving their finest wares for CES, which kicks off just after the New Year. Until then, we'll keep on keeping with the stuff we already own. Mat finally realized a backpack that won't send your gadgets crashing to the floor is a worthy investment, Andy's settled on a cheapie portable charger and Darren's at last upgraded to Firefox 7.0 (he's so crazy!). Which backpack is slowly sweeping the staff? And what was Engadget's managing editor doing using FF 3.6? Find the answers to that and more just past the break.
